Paradox seems to be a theme that we share
So much contradiction between who we are
And who others need us to be
There is a drought in the land of courage
But as the mountains begin to bathe in the tears of the dew
You remind me that a thirst is quenched in the hearts of a few
When pain stomps through your life louder than thunder
And hunger rapes your body like a debilitating disease
When friendships become more deadly than an invasive bacterium
And avaricious behaviors seduce us into believing we are fulfilling our dreams
You remind me to be courageous
When we find that we are holding on to the better part of ourselves
Gazing toward the future with hope and reams of promise
When our world is filled with joy and we feel as if we've arrived
And the blessings gifted to us as children stand before our eyes
You remind me to be compassionate
If we were gaily enthralled in all that makes one, you
Or are torn between the world and the integrity of what we do
If we are crying out and grieving for this place
Or challenged by the disconnects that mar the reflections of our face
If we are loving and selfless in our acts
Or bitter emanations of the chagrin that we've packed
You remind us to BE only what God has asked...
I smile because you remind me
